Community Involvement
Honored recipient of Environmental Stewardship Award
Each year a local environmental company is recognized for their hard work and dedication to keeping this great community clean; more specifically, the St. Louis estuary. The Randy Marshall Award, which is given to a business or industry, presented by the St. Louis River Alliance is awarded for keeping our local environment safe, clean, and green! On April 9, 2013, Hartel's / DBJ Disposal was recognized for their hard work and efforts in this matter, and this is the first time Hartel's / DBJ has received this award. Dan Hartel, an owner of Hartel's / DBJ, says in response to the award, "I was very taken back by the recognition. We are very humble people at Hartel's / DBJ, so being in the limelight is very difficult for us." The St. Louis River Alliance has been presenting awards like such, annually for the past 18 years.
Did you know that Hartel's / DBJ helps keep Duluth soccer fields clean for our community's families?
“We would like to thank Hartel's / DBJ Disposal Companies for providing free trash service to the Arlington, Jean Duluth and Hermantown soccer complexes this year. Hartel's / DBJ supplies these sites with large trash receptacles and smaller trash carts. And, they empty them during the season!” -- Dave Geary, Arrowhead Youth Soccer Association.

Keeping Business Local
So, what keeps a community’s economy stable? … Jobs for the people who live in the community and who care about the well-being of that community. It’s about the people who work here, pay taxes here, shop here, play here, volunteer here, and raise their families here. Hartel’s / DBJ Disposal is a small, local, family owned company that employs more than 40 people. These days, jobs are important regardless of their local connections, but there is something about a business that really has its roots in a community. At Hartel’s / DBJ, we’re proud to support the communities we serve with quality service provided by people who are part of the fabric of this region. While many businesses have had to face layoffs, Hartel’s / DBJ has grown 48% in the past five years by hiring 14 new people. “We employ 11 office staff, 17 drivers, 3 fabricators, and 10 people who work at our recycling facility. The majority of those employees grew up and went to school right here in the Northland,” reports Greg Hartel, Director of Human Resources. In addition to our local roots, Hartel’s / DBJ consciously looks for ways to support other local businesses. According to Greg Hartel, “We try to do business with those who do business with us. If we can buy something locally, we will. That includes everything from office supplies to truck purchases, truck repair services and purchasing parts for our trucks. And, of course, our fuel – that’s all local.”Hartel’s / DBJ customers can take satisfaction in knowing you are supporting our local economy. We couldn’t do it without you.

Recycling Center
Wouldn’t it be nice if everything we disposed of could be recycled? Unfortunately, that is not the case. However, we are pleased to be the only hauler in the Twin Ports that processes recyclables locally operating a state-of-the-art Recycling Center right here in Proctor. Our local Recycling Center maximizes the sorting of materials that can be recycled into many things that are used again and minimize filling up landfills.
We process 36 tons of material every day at our Recycling Center. Can you imagine the amount of landfill space our customers would use if you didn't recycle? As measured by weight, those 36 tons a day break down to about 75% paper, 16% glass, 6% plastic, and approximately 3% Tin /Aluminum. Some items that come into our recycling center are sorted out as Unrecyclable material and that amounts to about 1% of what we process a day. We take care of that too, by disposing of it properly.
At Hartel's / DBJ, we take recycling seriously. Any effort our customers make to recycle is a statement that you want the items you put into your cart to actually be recycled and support a healthy environment. We are able to keep many items local, reusing what you've recycled.
We're always in search of local Minnesota companies that are in business making new products out of the recyclables we collect and sort. That reduces the overall carbon footprint for those items - less vehicle travel, less carbon released.
