DISPOSAL COMPANIES SERVING ALL YOUR GARBAGE & RECYCLING NEEDS SINCE 1952

History Of Hartel's / DBJ

The disposal industry has come a long way in the last 50 years, and Hartel’s / DBJ Disposal Companies proudly continues to serve your neighborhood.

It was 1952 when Leo Hartel started his independent business, Duluth and Proctor Garbage Service. He operated with the principles of quality service and personal integrity. Leo continued to serve the community until 1985, when his son Dan Hartel and nephew Jeff Walstrom purchased the company. Hartel’s merged with Darrell B. Johnson’s DBJ Disposal Company in 1995 and soon after became know as Hartel’s / DBJ Disposal Companies.

Four name changes and a half century later, Hartel’s / DBJ Disposal is the largest locally owned disposal company in NE Minnesota. While much has changed in the industry and region, the company has rolled forward with new equipment while retaining its old fashioned values of customer service.

Who We Are Now

Hartel’s / DBJ Disposal provides weekly garbage and recycling pick-up for our Residential customers. Roll carts ranging in size from 25 to 95 gallons are provided free of charge. Weekly garbage and recycling service to the Commercial market is also provided, with containers from 1.5 to 8 yards.

Besides weekly garbage and recycling pick up, the company can help with project-related refuse for both the “do it yourselfer” and the Industrial market. With Roll-off boxes ranging in size from 10 to 30 yards, we can assist with easy disposal of large items or quantities while cleaning, remodeling, roofing or doing demolition. The box is delivered on site and picked up when the customer is done.  We also provide a "Home Dumpster Service" consisting of 3, 4 and 6 yard dumpsters, perfect for those smaller clean-out jobs when a Roll-off is just too large!

Community and family involvement continue to be a priority at Hartel’s / DBJ Disposal. Youth, high school and college sports, ALS snowmobile tour and MDA are a few examples.

We all work and live in the communities we serve, and most importantly, we keep your money working right here in the community for all of us!

Meet Our Employees

Dean Erickson has been working for Hartel's / DBJ Disposal for more than 14 years.  Dean lives in Duluth with wife Mary, and their four children.  Son Matt is 14 years old and plays hockey, soccer and baseball.  Dean's triplets, David, Elizabeth and Emily are 5 years old and basically determine what Dean does every evening.

When time allows, Dean enjoys fishing, hunting and a little broomball and softball.

Dean says he has found many "treasures" on his routes with Hartel's, ranging from TV's, VCR's, fishing poles, windows and even brand new things like tennis shoes.

Dean likes his job.  "I wouldn't have stayed with them this long if I didn't like it.  They're a good company, and they're good to us".
